Sometimes people forget that their mind and body are irrevocably linked. Many people live their lives believing that their body just functions ‘naturally’, like it’s on some kind of ‘autopilot’. However, nothing could be further from the truth. All the messages that our bodies receive first pass through the filter of our minds. This means, our thoughts and our emotions have a very real and direct affect on our bodily functions.

The mind and the body are not just acquaintances and while they are each brilliant in their own right, the duo have an astonishing and incredible relationship. Our breathing, physical sensations, digestion and movement among many other functions are all intricately controlled by neurotransmitters, hormones, chemicals and neural pathways. Essentially, there is a continuous feedback loop between the mind and the body and vice versa.

Your mind and your body could be described as two lifelong friends that collaborate and communicate all the time and on levels that are beyond our conscious awareness. Each thought and every emotion essentially sets off a chain reaction and our biology changes.

The mind communicates with the body through emotions. Have you ever noticed how a surge of happiness makes you feel lighter, or how stress often manifests as tension in your muscles? That’s because positive thoughts release endorphins, the body's natural feel-good chemicals and these boost our mood and can even reduce our perception of pain. Alternatively, negative thoughts, stress and anxiety trigger a cascade of physiological responses that can negatively affect the heart, digestion, immune system and beyond.

Understanding these concepts means mindfulness is vitally important in our day to day lives. Mindfulness means you are choosing to be present and tuned in to how your thoughts are affecting your body ~ literally how your current thought is affecting you in the now. Practicing mindfulness causes you to pause, slow down and experience each moment on a deeper level. In this way, mindfulness can be used as a means to decrease stress levels. You can use it to tune in and then decide if ‘this thought’ is helpful or not. It serves as your access to clear guidance because you can clearly see what direction you are moving towards ~ wanted or unwanted.

If you choose to pay attention to your thoughts, you can begin to slowly wean yourself off of undesirable and hurtful thoughts. Why not start using mindfulness today? Simply ask yourself several times throughout the day, to briefly stop and tune in to you and then ask yourself; do I really want to think and feel this way right now about… this person or this situation? Yes or no? If not, well here is your chance to consciously make a positive change in your life, to free yourself from chronic negative thoughts and invite a kinder experience, a calmer mind and a more relaxed the body.

As we become more and more attuned to our thoughts, we soon discover that we have opportunities in the now to regain our personal power. It all begins with understanding the mind-body connection and how quickly our lives can change for the better, when we choose to stop and re-frame our thoughts in a more positive direction, in the now. When we remove resistant thoughts through mindfulness, we open the door to a life that flows! Our bodies can heal, our stress levels can be decreased, and we no longer need to be afraid of our thoughts and emotions because we understand that we are the ones in control. In the now, we can choose to steer our lives into beautiful waters by controlling the direction of our thoughts.

If you decide that you want to heal from physical and emotional wounds, then you need to start with your mind. First, get clear on what messages your mind is sending your body because your body is always listening and your body will do what your mind tells it to do. So what messages do you want to send to yourself?
